'Idyllic Landscape with Ox and Figures' by Germaine Hageman (circa 1930s-40s)
SKU 2520
'Idyllic Landscape with Ox and Figures', pencil and gouache on art paper, by Germaine Hageman (circa 1930s-40s). This is a sensitive and quietly evocative drawing by the Belgian artist depicting a monumental ox in a rural landscape, attended by two distant figures seemingly on a break from their labour. The composition consists of a powerful, sculptural presence of the animal in the foreground, set against a gently receding landscape, articulated with spare, economical lines.
The work demonstrates Hageman’s assured draughtsmanship with an ability to convey a powerful image with restraint. The ox possesses a calm, almost introspective presence, while the background figures introduce a quiet human narrative of rural life. The artwork is in overall fair condition with the paper presenting a pleasing patina consistent with age and contributing to the work’s overall character. Presented under glass in a simple but elegant frame. The work is signed in the upper right hand. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request, a video will be provided.
About the Artist: Belgium artist Germaine Hageman (1897-1985). Hagemans gained notice as an artist for her very sensitive drawings and paintings of animals and landscapes; she also did small book covers, many featuring animals. She is recognised for her delicate technique, often working with fine drawings and pencilled instructions. Her work is frequently seen alongside other notable 20th-century artists in European auctions and galleries. She is the author and illustrator of a rare drawing manual titled Boby Dessine, which was published in a limited edition of 525 copies. Her artistic lineage is impressive, as her father was well-known for his Impressionist-influenced landscapes and was a member of the artist group Les XX.
