Ask a Question

'Cubist Still Life', gouache on paper, from the Italian School of artists (circa 1940s). Surely this very attractive piece was inspired by Juan Gris (1887-1927) and Georges Braque's (1882-1963) cubist style, not to mention the clear influence of the works of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). Discovered in North Central Italy, this charming work depicts a stringed instrument called a mandola in Italian (related to a lute), a vase, birds, and a clarinet, among others. The artist seems to have chosen to leave the final work 'unfinished'. The words seen in various places refer to colours in Italian, as if to provide direction regarding how the various items should be painted. Or, is the artist simply asking the viewer to imagine those colours in the unfinished parts?  It is an artwork with subtle colour and vibrancy while at the same time revealing its characterful, vintage history. The artwork is in good overall condition with a new frame and precious, non-reflective glass. The work shows some minor fading and blemishing commensurate with age. Upon request, a video can be provided. Unsigned by the artist. This artwork has two related paintings which we also acquired and that are in a similar style and subject matter, also on sale with this gallery. Their mysterious origins add to their attractiveness and desirability. Please enquire on this platform if all three artworks are desired as a triptych.
