'At the Table in a French Restaurant', French School (1970)
SKU 1409
'At the Table in a French Restaurant' oil on board, French School (Initials JR dated 1970). The scene depicted in this colourful painting takes the unusual perspective of the diner seated across from the woman in the blue dress. The conversations taking place at the other tables seem more consuming than the food on the viewer's table. In 1970s France 'la Nouvelle Cuisine' was all the rage...but so many people left unsatisfied with the small portions. Perhaps restaurants are less about the food than we think, and our relationship with them is more emotional and social. Ambiance – the feel of the place, is perhaps the most important. Sitting in a French restaurant, watching people at tables talking, plotting, flirting, celebrating may be the draw that keeps diners coming back. Perhaps that is the case in this artwork's restaurant as well. Discovered in the South of France, the painting is in good overall condition created in a unique style using impasto techniques and incising the oil paint to create texture and visual richness. It has been newly framed with a French-style linen slip. If only we knew who 'JR' was. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video may be provided.
