Decorative French Ceramic Ash Tray / Vide Poche by Fernande Kohler (circa 1960s)

Decorative French vintage ceramic ashtray / vide-poche by Fernande Kohler, Vallauris (c. 1960s). Chamotte earthenware rounded-square form accented by hand-decorated coloured enamel in various geometric shapes. Rustic in appearance with Southern French charm. Since smoking is taboo these days, it would have a productive new life as a decorative dish or vide-poche. The piece is both visually stunning and tactile at the same time, in good overall condition -  upon request a video may be provided. Signed on the underside: 'F. Kohler Vallauris'.

Unfortunately, very little is know about this ceramicist other than they were in Vallauris. In 1948 Picasso came to live in Vallauris, where he stayed until 1955. During his time in the town, he developed a fascination for the techniques of ceramics and linocuts. A freeman of the town, Picasso greatly contributed to the renaissance of the Vallauris pottery industry in the 1950s, this legendary golden age when everyone was a potter, including famous ceramicists Roger Capron. Many inhabitants still evoke his presence.
