Mid-century decorative platter (circa 1960s) by Albert Thiry. A pristine white glaze provides the backdrop for a colourful thistle motif in the centre recess. The rim is an earthy green with patches of mulberry-red complementing decor in the thistle. The markings and colouring are quintessential Albert Thiry although the white is missing his characteristic mist. In very good vintage condition. Signed: 'Thiry' on the earthy clay underside of the dish. This gallery finds that Thiry's works deserve the increased interest and demand in his pieces in overdue recognition of his artistic creativity. About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian.
