Carved Wooden Weaving Tools from Flores Island, Indonesia (circa 1980s)
SKU 0890
Carved wooden weaving tools from Flores Island, Indonesia (circa 1980s). The creative spirit of Indonesian islanders is alive and well in these carved weaving tools from the area. Although this pair does not show the anatomical detail that many do, they most likely represent the clan's ancestors. Flores is an island of extraordinary beauty. Their artistic achievements are well documented and the people of Central Flores are highly accomplished weavers creating garments using ikat techniques.
This form of weaving requires the most skill for precise patterns to be woven and is considered the premiere form of ikat. At the base of these particular figures you will find round openings which ostensibly connect the weaver to the loom or perhaps help maintain the tension of the fabric. The pair's patinas are different, the smaller figure's has a smooth sheen, the other more like raw, unpolished wood. They are in fair vintage condition situated on modern stands. These are lovely, decorative pieces which can be displayed in your home or workplace. Upon request a video of the pieces will be provided.
