Carved Wooden Figure from Nias, Indonesia (circa 1960s - 70s)
SKU 0901
Carved wooden vise tool with human figure finial from Nias, Indonesia (circa 1960s - 70s). A striking carved piece with geometric patterns on the top and bottom of the figure. Rectangular voids are cut into the figure's length most likely so that it can be used as a handle, crank or vise for another apparatus. It was carved by the people of Nias, an island located off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Nias is also the name of the archipelago of which the island is the centre, but also includes the Batu Islands to the south-east and the small Hinako Islands to the west. The piece is in fair vintage condition commensurate with age and use and rests on a modern stand (included). There are characterful, cracks, nicks and blemishes throughout. Please see accompanying photos for detail.
