Ask a Question

A striking, large-scale (height 75 cm) stoneware figural sculpture by Albert Thiry (1967), formed as a tall, cylindrical robed body surmounted by a separately modelled, naturalistically rendered head. The robe is decorated using incised and glazed techniques, with bold white slip patterning roundels, foliate motifs, and vertical striping set against the dark, textured stoneware body, with one arm extended outward in a gesture. Not one of Thiry's more typical subjects, known chiefly for his vases, platters, and bowls, this large and imposing figural sculpture represents a rarer and more ambitious strand of his output.

This piece was professionally and expertly restored by an art professional after sustaining damage in transit from France; the repair has been carried out to a high standard and is not readily visible. Signed on the underside: Thiry 67.

About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932–2009) was a ceramist from Nice who studied at the city's École des Arts Décoratifs, settling in the potters' village of Vallauris with his wife, Pyot Gavaudan. He trained in various workshops, including that of Charles Voltz, and in 1956 worked as a decorator alongside Marcel Vertès and Anton Prinner, who introduced him to sculpture. He established his own studio in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian.
