'Woman Mending a Fishing Net', pastel on paper, by Alfred Salvignol (circa 1950s). The role of women as support to seagoing spouses has been both very important and highly undervalued by the fishing communities. This lovely artwork pays homage to the unsung workers - women - without whom fishermen could not support their families. In this depiction, a fisherman's spouse mends the net so vital to the  prosperity of her family. She sits waterside near the azure blue and bobbing boats of Nice's Vieux Port. Even as recently as the 1950s, the French towns and villages along the Riviera were working ports as well as tourist destinations. But this painting depicts a world apart from the glamour of the Côte d'Azur. The self-sacrificing labour and special skill of the subject captured by the artist makes this a very heartfelt work indeed. The painting is in good condition, is newly framed and glazed and signed by the artist, 'Salvignol' in the lower right hand corner. A similar work in pastel held by this gallery also by this artist is dated 1951. Upon request a video of the artwork may be provided.

About the artist: Alfred Salvignol was born in the late 19th century and worked well into the 20th. He is best known for his works of Mediterranean ports, particularly Nice. His art frequently is the object of spirited bidding at prominent European auction houses.
