Mid-Century French Decorative Platter by Albert Thiry (circa 1960s)
SKU 1258
Mid-century decorative platter (circa 1960s) by Albert Thiry. A chalk-white glaze provides the background for a colourful thistle motif in the centre recess. The rim is an earthy green and brown which matches grass below the thistle. The rounded edges of the squared shape, a squircle, provides visual interest. The incised plants have depth and are tactile. The markings and colouring are quintessential Albert Thiry. In good vintage condition. Signed: 'Thiry' on earthy clay base of dish. This gallery finds that Thiry's works are more and more in demand in overdue recognition of his artistic creativity. Upon request a video of this piece will be provided.
About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932 - 2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian.
