Mid-century decorative plate (circa 1960s) by Albert Thiry (1932 - 2009). An earthy, glazed centre with swirls of brown and touches of green is encircled, like petals of a flower by deeply engraved rectangles. Inside are leaves and crowns in dark chocolate brown with a hazy white frame. The lip of the dish has a smooth glaze varying in colour from white to brown to green. The markings and colouring are quintessential Albert Thiry making this piece not only visually stunning but very tactile as well. The circular shape is irregular in height by design. In good vintage condition. Signed: 'Thiry' on base of dish but barely perceptible. This gallery finds that Thiry's works are more and more in demand in overdue recognition of his artistic creativity. About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932 - 2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian.
