Mid-Century Decorative Bowl by Albert Thiry (circa 1960s)
SKU 0702
Mid-century decorative bowl (circa 1960s) by Albert Thiry (1932 - 2009). A white glazed centre at the bowl's base is encircled by deeply engraved leaves in brown over a hazy white surface with touches of Thiry's signature green. The dark brown of the lip is punctuated by a repeating motif in white. The exterior of the piece reiterates the same colours yet is decorated differently with an incised reed pattern which encircles its entirety. The bowl is not only visually stunning but very tactile as well. In very good vintage condition. Signed: 'Thiry' on base underside of dish. This gallery finds that Thiry's works are more and more in demand in overdue recognition of his artistic creativity. Upon request a video of this piece will be provided.
About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932 - 2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian.
