An artist known for his exquisite drawings - many are sketches for his larger oil paintings or other works - this piece is compelling because its image emerges from just a few graceful lines, curves and shading. Its beauty lies in its simplicity. It may be a study for a larger work. This drawing depicts a square-rigged sailing ship at anchor, seen from the stern so that its masts and yards rise in a tall stack of sails. Dulac sketches the rigging in a few fine, taut lines, with the broad stern built up in firmer strokes. Behind the ship, the faint outlines of quayside buildings suggest a busy Mediterranean port, perhaps the Vieux-Port de Marseille, while a small boat tends to the larger ship's starboard side. This work is in good overall condition. Given its nearly 100 years, it is notable for its state of preservation. The paper has a small single piercing at the very top centre but not affecting its visual presentation - please see the many photos accompanying this listing. The artwork has been newly framed and glazed. Upon request, a video of the artwork will be provided. Although the drawing is unsigned, our gallery holds virtually the entire remaining collection of this artist's sketches and memorabilia and therefore, its provenance is impeccable. A series of Dulac's sketches may be acquired from our gallery on this platform to create a set to enhance a corridor or stairway of your home or workplace.

About the Artist: Guillaume Dulac (1883-1929) was born Joseph Georges Guillaume Dulac in Fumel, in south-west France.
