'Portrait of Suited Man' by Ernest Pernelle (1944)

'Portrait of Suited Man', oil on canvas, 1944, by Ernest Pernelle, (1861 - 1950). This is a very expressive painting of a distinguished suited gentleman. Unfortunately, no information is to be had regarding his identity however, it remains a work of substantial quality. And of course, everyone needs a historic relative or distinguished colleague on their wall at home or at work. This fits the bill perfectly. The painting is in fair vintage condition with some evidence of minor cracking and cupping commensurate with its age (1944). The original weighty frame is very characterful and a vintage piece in its own right. It is showing cracks and wear and tear but was retained to maintain the integrity and personality of the piece. About the Artist: Ernest Marie Louis Pernelle (1851-1950) was a pupil of Frenchmen Jules Lefebvre and Guillemet. Pernelle exhibited in Paris starting in 1911 at the prestigious Salon des Artistes Français where he was awarded a silver medal in 1914 and of which he subsequently became a distinguished member. His work was also judged of such quality that he was invited to exhibit at the Salon des Indépendants from 1923. Pernelle's works have an international following and continue to appear for sale at the world's major auction houses including in 2018. The artist died in 1950.
