The design draws on the historic lustreware tradition centred on the Persian city of Kashan, where, from the 1170s onward, potters mastered a distinctive metallic glazing technique achieved through a second, low-temperature firing that had previously only been used in parts of Egypt, Syria, and Iraq. Figural decoration from this period often shows rounded, softly featured faces reflecting the influence of Chinese pictorial styles then fashionable in Iran, with seated figures generally understood as decorative rather than symbolic, evoking scenes of leisure and refined living.
