'La Petite Gitane' (The Little Gypsy), (c. 1940s-1950s), oil on board, by Marguerite Barrière-Prévost (1887 - 1981). A young girl with a bouquet of spring flowers stands before a bright blue house on a warm southern day. She seems to be offering the flowers to the viewer. Overhead, cacti are in bloom with yellow flowers. An agave plant shoots towards the sun behind her. A beautiful young child, flowers, a sunny day with nature's vibrant colours all in this lovely oil painting by an historic female artist. In excellent vintage condition, in original frame with linen mount. Signed in lower right hand 'Barrière-Prévost'.
About the Artist: Barrière-Prévost was a pupil of artist L. Roger and exhibited regularly in Paris during the 1920s, both at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Société Coloniale des Artistes Français. She also exhibited with the Casbah group. Barrière-Prévost settled in Morocco, part of colonial France, painting mostly gouaches there which were exhibited at the Salon des Tuilleries in the pre-war period of the 1920s and 1930s. The artist is collected internationally and her oil paintings often exceed auction estimates.
