A generously proportioned lidded Pot Pourri jar in one of Roger Capron's most celebrated and sought-after decorations. The cylindrical body is entirely covered in the iconic Carreaux pattern — a mosaic grid of hand-applied glazed squares which gives the piece the jewel-like richness of a stained-glass window translated into ceramic.

The domed lid echoes the mosaic decoration with a radiating pattern of coloured dashes, and is pierced with a curved aperture sized to allow the scent of dried flowers or potpourri to escape into the room. Above it rises a sculptural double-gourd finial in smooth white glaze — a characteristic Capron flourish that elevates a functional object into something altogether more considered and sculptural. The contrast between the richly patterned body and the clean white of the finial is typical of Capron's refined sensibility — decorative exuberance held in check by an instinct for formal elegance. On the underside, the piece is signed 'Roger Capron pour Jardins de France.' Jardins de France - a French company known for high-end home fragrance, potpourri and interior accessories, was particularly popular in the 1970s and 1980s.

The ceramic is in overall good condition. Working from his atelier in Vallauris — the Provençal town synonymous with ceramic production since antiquity and reinvigorated by Picasso's presence in the 1950s — Capron developed a body of work that fused modernist design principles with Mediterranean warmth and colour. His tablewares, vessels and tiles are held in museum collections internationally and have seen sustained growth in the collector market over the past two decades.

https://bialondon.com/products/french-vintage-ceramic-pot-pourri-jar-by-roger-capron-for-jardins-de-provence-circa-1970s
