'Tennis Player in Serving Motion' by Lucienne Pageot-Rousseaux (circa 1940s)

'Tennis Player in Serving Motion', ink drawing on paper, by Lucienne Pageot-Rousseaux (circa 1940s). The artist was renowned for creating works depicting dancers and athletes in motion. More calligraphy than painting, she pared an image and its motion down to its essentials with a remarkable economy of simple, elegant lines. She had a real connection with the world of dance, theatre and entertainment but also to sport as an artist for the Summer Olympics of 1928. Ink was her favourite medium as it brought the movement of the subject to the fore as it does in this elegant artwork of a tennis player in his serving motion. The work is in good condition, newly framed and glazed and is signed by the artist in the lower left hand. Written in pencil near the signature is difficult to decipher but speculating, it may be 'Paumes Tennis', referring to the French origins of the game when it was called the 'Jeu de Paumes' (Palm game before rackets were used).
