'Café de Paris', watercolour on card paper, by André Meurice (1962). There are several Cafés de Paris in the world, probably the best known is in London's West End. André Meurice however, depicted life along the Riviera of the 1920s and 30s. This whimsical and animated piece is most likely in Monte Carlo. In that era, Art Deco was celebrated at the Café de Paris in Monte Carlo, which was completely refurbished in the 1930s. The magic of Monte Carlo made celebrities forget the tragedies of this troubled period: the financial crisis of the 30s and the threat of war. It seems like the subjects - sailors and ladies - are partying to forget the troubles of those times. In the midst of a pandemic, we can all relate to that! Next door to the café, the Hôtel de Paris was a real haven of tranquillity for its guests. Many of them were British: Lloyd George, Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Robert Vansittart and the Duke of Westminster all graced its corridors. Whether it is the Café de Paris or simply the spirit of the Café, it is wonderfully captured here by the artist, André Meurice. In good vintage condition commensurate with age. The work has been newly framed and glazed. It is signed and dated by the artist in the lower lefthand corner. Please view the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video will be provided.

About the Artist: André Meurice was active in the 20th century. For someone who has had dozens of paintings sold at the international auction houses, surprisingly little is known of his life. Most of his drawings and gouache works depict elegant and glamorous scenes in France and the Côtes d'Azur from a bygone era.
