Ask a Question

'A Bar in Evian, France', oil on canvas, by Pierre Christin (circa 1960s - 70s). Sitting and sipping in a French café-bar is among the finest common pleasures. Sitting and sipping is the point. Drinks are priced to allow you to take your time at the table, chatting, people-watching, reading a newspaper, magazine or book, writing notes or postcards...or just surfing on your mobile phone. You needn't rush. The waiter won't rush you. One cup of coffee ordered allows you to sit at the table for an hour, even two. Whatever you do, when you call the waiter, say "Monsieur!" (no one says "Garçon" anymore). In this painting, it seems the staff are having their pre-lunch hour rush briefing. Love the cash register. Remember those?

The artwork is in good vintage condition commensurate with age and is newly framed in a tray. The artist's signature is in the lower lefthand corner. Please view the listing's accompanying photos carefully to appreciate its condition and style. Upon request, a video of the piece may be provided.

About the Artist: Pierre Christin was born in 1935 in the Haute-Savoie region of France in Évian-les-Bains. He studied drawing in Lausanne, Switzerland and followed on that experience at the School of Fine Arts in Rennes, Northern France. In 1959 Christin based himself permanently in Paris and there developed a dedicated following of international art lovers. After having encountered two important Japanese art dealers in 1969, the doors were opened to that country with several exhibitions in Tokyo, Osaka and at the Nakata Museum in Hiroshima. As a result, the artist generated a particularly strong audience for his works in Japan. Some of the many international exhibitions were held in Caracas, Monte Carlo, Basel and of course, Paris. In 1996, Christin was awarded the XXXIst International Contemporary Art prize in Monaco in the context of 700 years of art in that Principality. His works become available at the international auction houses periodically and generate enthusiastic bidding as competition for his works become very spirited.
