Ask a Question

'Two Nudes in Landscape', oil on soft board, by STM (circa 1950s). So many artists have painted nudes in landscapes: Picasso, Otto Mueller, Marcel Duchamp, Frida Kahlo and others. This artwork by STM has a wonderful synergy whereby the human subjects and the plants exist in harmony. They seem to extend upwards at similar angles fighting for the sun's attention; the leaves on the branches curiously resemble the limbs of the seated women. Also doubling as geometric lines, the branches of the vegetation in the painting allow the artist to define a colour area as a means to creatively express their feelings.

STM was certainly inspired by the works of very well known artists. He/She lived in Berlin in the period after WWII is what we know. We also know that several galleries have acquired and are now selling STM'S works - this speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art. This piece is in very good vintage condition in a new frame with linen slip. There is some very minor peeling in the upper right hand quadrant of the work, however, it does not detract in the least from the viewer's overall impression or perspective. Initialed, 'STM' in lower right hand corner. A short video clip of this work may be provided upon request.
