'The Spanish Shepherd' (Le Berger Espagnol), oil on canvas (1966), by Jean Baudet (1914 - 1989). A dynamically colourful expressionist work which is beautifully simple and very sophisticated at the same time. The bond between human, animal and earth is inextricably linked and this piece beautifully conveys the sentiment. The bronzed shepherd is pictured here with one of his flock, a goat whose pure white coat contrasts with the vivid colours of the landscape. The goat symbolises fertility, vitality and ceaseless energy, all elements required in nature's cycles. This painting is in excellent vintage condition and is in its beautiful original frame. The work remained in the hands of the family of the artist near Biarritz, France for 30 years and then spent the next 20 in a family home on the French Riviera. It was obtained in Paris from the great nephew of the artist, one of the few remaining members of the extended family. Signed: 'Jean Baudet'.
