'Still Life with Bowl of Fruit and Cards', oil on board (circa 1940s - 1960s), by G. Muller. A restrained use of colour in this cubist homage to the founders of the movement, Georges Braque (1882 - 1963) who started cubism with Picasso (1891 - 1973) in the early 20th century. Together, then separately, they developed a revolutionary new style of painting which transformed everyday objects, landscapes, and people into geometric shapes. They in turn took inspiration from the work of Cezanne who created paintings with multiple perspectives. Juan Gris was evidently very influential in the style of this work as well. This piece by G. Muller uses these influences to create a compelling still life in solid earth tones and muted blues and greys to emphasise the flatness of the surface yet retain the solidity of the objects being painted. In good vintage condition. Newly framed with linen insert. Upon request a video of the artwork will be provided.
Our gallery has access to a cache of paintings from Berlin in the 1940s - 1960s. Regrettably the artist is unknown and it is therefore impossible to deduce anything about their background or aspirations. What we do know is this work remains beautifully compelling even after so many years from its creation. Signed: 'G. Muller' in the lower righthand corner. A video clip of this piece will be provided upon request.
