Ask a Question

'Still Life with Anemones in Pitcher', oil on canvas, French School (circa 1930s). A very exceptional still life demonstrating masterful technique by the artist who has a delicate, sensitive touch and keen eye. The subdued light falls on a portion of the pitcher and those flowers just above it. The Greek myths lend the Anemone flower dual meanings of the arrival of spring breezes and the loss of a loved one. The Victorians took a slightly different slant on the loss embodied by the flower and used it to represent a forsaken love of any kind in their intricate 'Language of the Flowers'. The pitcher in which the flowers stand is most likely French chinoiserie, a European interpretation of Asian culture and decorative style. The artwork recently received a surface cleaning and preservation. It is in good condition and is newly framed with a French style linen slip. It is signed in the lower left hand corner by the artist. The best read on the surname is 'Malampuy'. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video of the artwork may be provided.
