Ask a Question

'Portrait of Cerebral Woman', oil on board (c. 1940s - 1960s) by artist with the name, Ross, most likely German. It's regrettable that this portrait's creator left the identify of this beautiful woman to be a secret forever. We also know nothing about the artist, Ross. Acquired in Germany, the quality and execution of the work is exemplary - there is an intangible something that speaks to the viewer but remains hard to describe. Why is this painting so special? Is it the serious gaze of the subject? Maybe it was a self-portrait? Maybe it didn't quite meet the artist's own expectations? Perhaps the subject was a lover who moved on? Whatever the case, we love it in our gallery - the portrait oozes character; is deftly executed in muted colours -  and it certainly piques one's curiosity. Who is this intense, cerebral woman with a tired gaze and why was she painted? Only the artist knows we will suppose. Newly framed with linen slip. In good vintage condition commensurate with age. Signed: 'Ross' in lower righthand corner. Upon request a video of the artwork will be provided.

Note: Our gallery has access to a cache of paintings from Berlin in the 1940s - 1960s. Several galleries have acquired and are now selling these works which speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art.
