'Portrait of a Reclining Feline' by artist with the initials, STM, oil on board (circa 1940s - 1950s). Clearly inspired by the works of Picasso, this is a colourful and affectionate cubist portrait of a graceful cat. Perhaps sitting on the window sill gazing out onto the world, this serene cat is brought to life with colour, lines, angles and curves. Picasso himself painted stylised cats in more than a dozen of his works as he was intrigued with their presence and certainly their elegance. His portraits of a cat eating a bird (1939) and later works of cats with lobsters in the mid-sixties as well as the presence of cats in many portraits, attest to his love of the grace of these animals. In this case, the artist uses that inspiration to create this wonderful cubist feline depiction. Simply charming and a sophisticated portrait for animal lovers. The artist, STM, lived in Berlin in the period after WWII. Several galleries have acquired and are now selling STM'S works - this speaks to the widespread assessment of the quality and interest of the art. This piece is in excellent vintage condition in a new frame with linen slip. Initialed, 'STM' in lower right hand corner. A short video clip of this work may be provided upon request.
