'French Landscape' by Georges Briata (1959)

'French Landscape', watercolour on art paper, by Georges Briata (1959). In the eastern reaches of the French countryside much closer to Lake Geneva than the hustle and bustle of the French capital, rolling hills and country paths are the norm. The artist dedicated this marvellous landscape to a close friend and one with whom he spent some time in this region. On the bottom right of the painting, it is dedicated and signed: "For you Denis - a souvenir of our stay in the Doubs, but mostly of our faithful friendship. G. Briata, Frasne, '59." About the Artist: Georges Briata (born 1933), grew up in an artistic milieu, as the son of a well known photographer and, his mother, a pianist for silent movies. It was clear from an early age he was destined for a life in the arts. He picked up a paint brush at the age of 6 and never put it down. After having attended classes at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille, he was persuaded that his talents lay in the graphic arts. He moved to Paris in his late teens and studied at the School of Arts Décoratifs and then the Paris School of Fine Arts. His goal wasn't to chase degrees - he was simply looking for excuses to extend his stay in Paris as a young man. Having those degrees however led him, at the ripe age of 27, to an appointment as professor of art in Marseille's School of Fine Arts. It was this appointment that afforded him a comfortable salary and a worry-free life allowing him to pursue his painting. He has been prolific in that regard, a measure of his worldwide success. He has held exhibitions and sold paintings in New York, Washington DC, Boston, Grand Rapids, Miami Beach, Montréal, Tokyo, Genève, Beirut, Lyon and of course, Paris. His hometown of Marseille has recognised his accomplishments as an artist and has commissioned many works as well as sponsored retrospective exhibitions of 50 years of Briata's artworks. The City of Paris also organised a retrospective titled: "From 1956 to Today", held at the Museum of the Orangerie of the Senate in the Jardin de Luxembourg.
