'Flower Market Antibes (Le Marché aux Fleurs à Antibes)', ink and gouache on art paper, by Pierre Daboval (circa 1960s). Antibes is a resort town between Cannes and Nice on the French Riviera. It's known for its old town enclosed by the 16th-century ramparts of Fort Carré which nowadays overlooks the marina's luxury yachts. Every morning in the old town is a colourful Provençal market with fruit, vegetables, local wares and an abundance of flowers. Daboval's depiction of the activity and colour of the market transports the viewer to a simpler time in the French Riviera when many of the coastal villages were home to locals and fishermen rather than fashionistas from around the world. In very good vintage condition. Original frame has been reglazed. Signed in lower right hand corner: 'Daboval'. If requested, a video clip of the work may be provided.

About the Artist: Pierre Daboval (1918 - 2015), French artist who studied at the Académie de la Grand Chaumière, the Académie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, "plucking here and there from the teachings, until I had enough to make a bouquet". In 1974 his erotic drawings were shown as part of an exhibition alongside those, among others, of Pablo Picasso. In 1970 Daboval gave up painting to devote himself to drawing. He lived in Mirepoix, France from 1998 until his death in May 2015.
