Ask a Question

'Composition with Triumphant Figure', oil on board (circa 1960s) by unknown artist. A restrained depiction of a figure seemingly raising their arms in exultation appeals to those who prefer less than more. Inspired by the cubist movement of the early 20th century, this work has more than a whiff of Picasso. Like Picasso's use of 'primitive' masks for inspiration, this work may also have been influenced by ancient cave wall art. This may have also motivated the choice of using a darker board as the medium on which to paint the figure. Initialed in lower lefthand corner: 'ZR'. In good vintage condition and newly framed with linen slip. Upon request, a video of the piece will be provided.

Our gallery has access to a cache of paintings from the school of Berlin in the 1940s - 1960s. What we know of these artworks is derived from our source from whom we've obtained this piece along with several others. The artist who used the initials, 'ZR', ostensibly lived in Berlin in the period after WWII. This may explain the use of initials rather than a full signature. We have to remember that under Soviet-controlled East Berlin after the war, this type of art was considered a radical departure from the 'authorised' socialist realism.
