Poët-Laval decorative ceramic platter by Jacques Pouchain (c. 1950s). This very rare platter incorporates an image of a stylised wine pitcher and bunch of grapes on a rustic table, as in a still life painting by Picasso. Beyond the image is a light green background which angles upwards towards the decorative outer edge with grape motif. This piece is one of Pouchain's highly personal works created in Poët-Laval rather than in the town next door, Dieulefit, where his more commercial pieces were produced. The maker's mark on the bottom reflects this differentiation. In good vintage condition commensurate with age. There is some slight fading of the glazing and an evident crack in the base which has been repaired along with an interesting taped mark from the original production. A rare collector's piece from the personal repertoire of the master ceramicist, Jacques Pouchain.

About the Artist: Jacques Pouchain (1925-2005) left Paris and gave up his architectural training in the 1950's for the South of France to devote himself to art and his commercial pottery studio at Dieulefit. He produced highly personal work in Poët-Laval both revealing a modern approach to pottery.
